Volunteers

Parent volunteers are critical to the success of Torrey Pines Water Polo. Below is a list of volunteer postitions with a description of the job. Please contact the Athletic Booster Board Liaison to get involved.

Athletic Booster Board Liaison
Mary Lighterink - Boy's Team (858-342-7574)
Wendy Avis - Girl's Team (858-232-1818)
Bruce Breneman - Girl's Team (858-603-5537)

The TPHS Athletic Booster Board Liaison leads the parent volunteer organization and manages the Boy's water polo budget. It takes about $20,000 per year to run the Boy's TPHS water polo program. This is more money than is collected through the suggested parent donations at the beginning of the season, so every year, fundraising is critical to the success of this program. The board liaison is responsible for:

  • Managing the water polo budget. This includes: establishing budgets for all activities (such as the banquet and equipment purchases), providing the leadership to raise money so that the team has enough money to operate, and submitting bills to the water polo account at the TPHS Foundation. For example, in 2003, volunteers raised money from the community to buy new shot clocks.
  • Finding parent volunteers to do everything (except coach the team), and verifying that volunteer jobs get done. (Volunteer roles are listed below.)
  • Attending a monthly meeting (year-round) of all TPHS sports representatives. Our liaison represents the interests of the Boy's water polo team at these meetings, and gathers information about school policies that affect the water polo team.
  • Fielding questions and concerns from other parents.
  • Communicating with the coaches.
  • Finding a liaison for the following year and training that person how to do the job.

Falcon Card Coordinator
Falcon Cards are one of the best (and easiest) ways for Torrey Pines water polo players to raise money to cover their donation for the season. The money generated by Falcon Card sales is credited directly to a player's water polo expenses.

How Do Falcon Cards Work?
A $20 Falcon Card offers hundreds of dollars in discounts at local merchants and restaurants. Falcon Cards become available in late July or early August. Water polo players sell the cards to people in the community for $20 apiece. Each player is credited $17 for every Falcon card that he sells, so a boy who sells 10 Falcon cards earns $170 in credit toward his suggested donation to the water polo team.

A player who wants to sell Falcon cards tells the Falcon Card Coordinator how many cards he will sell, and his parents pay the coordinator for those cards up front. (For example, ten cards are $200.) The boy then goes out into the community and sells those cards. If the boy's parents buy 10 Falcon cards, then the boy gets $170 credit toward his water polo expenses. If the boy does not sell the cards, then the parent keeps the cards, and the boy still gets the $170 credit. A great way to sell cards is for 3-4 players to get together and set up a table in front of a grocery store (please ask permission from the business management first). Contact the Falcon Card Coordinator if you are interested.

Team Clothing "Spirit Package"
The clothing "Spirit Package" usually consists of: TPHS water polo swim suit, sweatshirt, 2 t-shirts (one of which is to be worn on game days).

Water Polo Awards Banquet
Responsibilities: choose a date (have the Board Liaison ask Coach Rob about possible dates -- do this early), work with the Board Liaison to finalize the budget, select a location, choose the menu, update the banquet program, get center pieces, and find volunteers to man the sign in table at the banquet (to verify people have paid). Senior gifts and coach appreciation gifts are passed out at the banquet and included in the budget for this event. This job requires at least three people. The electronic file of the banquet program, and a budget from the previous year is available from the Board Liaison.

Foundation Dinner Dance/ Auction Item
The Foundation Dinner Dance is a fun event and great source of revenue for the water polo team. If you attend, ½ of your ticket price goes directly to the team (when you indicate that you are part of either boy's or girl's water polo on your reservation). Boys and girls team donations are treated separately. Each team is supposed to donate something to the auction, such as gift basket. This volunteer encourages families from Varsity, Jr Varsity and Novice teams to attend. The Foundation Dinner Dance is usually in March.

Rummage Sale
This volunteer leads a team of people that run the Boy's water polo rummage sale area. This is a great source of revenue for the team. The leader of this effort will be asking for volunteers and reminding you to bring in your donations. NOTE: Proceeds from the rummage sale reduce the overall price of the water polo suggested donation by more than 10% per player.

Photography (Team photos for Varsity, JV, & Novice)
This volunteer takes pictures or finds photographers to take pictures of each team. Required photos include team photos for the year book and web site, and several individual photos of each senior to give to the seniors to take home at the end of the year.

Ad for Football Program
This volunteer collects photos and artwork that can be used to create a full page b/w ad promoting the water polo team. This ad appears in the annual football program. Artwork is due in August.

Team Statistics
This important job requires a volunteer for each team (Varsity, JV, Novice). These volunteers record player statistics, such as number of goals, steals and assists. You will be trained how to do this job.

Videotaping of Team
This person videotapes the varsity team games. Coach Rob uses these tapes to coach the team.

Home Game Score Board and Shot Clock Operation (You will be trained)
Marc Nasoff, Nancy McGee

Equipment Acquisition
This person is responsible for raising funds for specific team purchases, such as the shot clocks.

Call In Results to Newspapers
This volunteer calls in the results of Varsity home games to the North County Times and the San Diego Union. It's easy if you program the phone numbers for the two papers into your cell phone, and call in the results from the pool deck as soon as the game is over.
The report to the paper includes:

  • Score by quarter and final score
  • Top scorers from each team
  • Overall records of each team (talk to the Coach of the visiting team before the game to get this information)
  • Notable information (North County Times only). This is a short description of highlights, such as a high number of saves by the goalie, or a high number of assists by a player.

Example: North County Times - Local Scoreboard, Nov. 12, 2003

Torrey Pines 12, Poway 10 (OT)
Poway.............. 0 4 3 3 0 0 - 10
Torrey Pines.....1 2 5 2 2 0 - 12

Top Scorers: Todd Conway (TP) 4, Peter Gresham (TP) 3, Craig Erickson (P) 4.

Notable: A.J. Kessler and Tyler Boetcher each scored an overtime goal as Torrey Pines avenged its lone league loss to tie Poway for the league title in the regular season finale for both teams.

Records: Poway 17-8 (overall), 7-1 (league). Torrey Pines 19-8 (overall), 7-1 (league).

Producing the Roster
Ask the Board Liaison for the roster file from last year. Verify that all email addresses, phone numbers, and complete mailing addresses are up-to-date. Collect information at the 1st parent meeting. Ask returning players to check their information at that meeting. Make revisions and send updated roster out via email.

Car Pool
Organize car pools for major events such as summer water polo camp.
